Tomato Contains High Amounts Of Vitamin C

Early June is around the time you should be thinking about putting out your tomato plants. Or for those lucky enough to have heated greenhouses it is the time you will be well into your winter sown crop.

Tomatoes are certainly not one of the easiest crops to grow. I think they are one of the most rewarding especially since most of the supermarkets have decided to sell a choice of either

Organic Bumper

o Over-priced "vine" tomatoes

Tomato Contains High Amounts Of Vitamin C

o Half ripened round reddish balls they call tomatoes, but bear no resemblance what so ever in taste to tomatoes.

The main reason for this tasteless charade of a tomato is that they are picked green to ensure they don't rot in transit then artificially ripened by having ethylene sprayed on them. Hence vine tomatoes having much more flavour as they are left to ripen on the vine.

History:

The tomato is not technically a vegetable but the fruit of Lycopersicon Lycopersicum or tomato plant. It is often grouped with vegetables because of its use in the kitchen. Its name comes from the Aztec word tomatl simply meaning plump fruit. The true Aztec word for tomato is xitomatl but the Spanish on the introduction of the fruit to Europe corrupted this name losing the suffix and thus creating the Spanish tomate or English tomato.

Tomatoes are highly versatile and are used in thousands of recipes right across Europe, from ketchup to chowder, pizzas to Bloody Mary's.

It wasn't always the case though and the tomato was treated with suspicion right across the old-world after its arrival from the Americas. For around 300 years the tomato was only grown as an ornamental plant, herbalists of the time would claim it was responsible for a whole host of ills including diarrhoea and colic. It wasn't until around 1800 and later that the tomato began to shed it's image as a poisonous relative of the nightshade family (which it is a member) and become as popular as it is today.

Tomato Nutrition:

The tomato contains high amounts of vitamin C and is high in beta-carotene the precursor of vitamin A. Two average sized tomatoes will contain the recommended daily intake of Vitamin C for the average adult. Tomatoes are also high in lycopene another carotenoid (like beta-carotene) which acts as an antioxidant helping to combat free radical damage in the body. As lycopene is fat soluble cooking it with a small amount of fat will make this compound more bio-available. This means that rather than being destroyed lycopene is more useful in foods like ketchup than in raw tomatoes. Lycopene has been proven to lower the risk of cancers, stroke and heart disease.

Growing Tips:

o Don't plant near potatoes

o Pick a sunny spot to grow them preferably against a south facing wall

o Germinate at 15 C to 20 C (59 - 68 o F)

o A window-sill, on a table in a bay window, in a heated conservatory under cloches are all good places to germinate seeds this can be done in April - May, June at a push.

o Harden plants off before planting outside.

o Chives planted next to tomatoes discourage aphids, yellow flowers such as marigolds also good planted next to tomatoes.

o Place in a drawer with apples to ripen.

Cooking tomatoes:

I know very few people, if any, that wouldn't know at least one way to cook a tomato. They are extremely versatile; you can have them grilled for breakfast with a little black pepper, in a salad for lunch then with pasta for your evening meal and as a drink in a Bloody Mary's at night. You could also try tomato soup.

Disease Resistant Tomatoes - How to Identify Them

Growing tomatoes isn't too difficult but they can be prone to disease. Don't despair though, as there are plenty of disease resistant varieties available but that in itself leads to another problem which is how to identify them.

Each variety is coded; e.g. "VF", "VFFA", "VFNT" but how on earth are we supposed to know what these acronyms mean? How do we tell which variety is resistant to which disease? That is where the coding comes in, which is fine if you know what each code means.

Organic Bumper

Below are the common designations, which should help you choose which variety of tomato plant is the one for you.

Disease Resistant Tomatoes - How to Identify Them

"A" means that the plant has resistance to the Alternaria alternata fungus which is a cause of Alternaria stem canker. The stems, leaves and fruit of the tomato are badly affected by cankers that vary in colour from dark brown to black. If the cankers are on the stem, there are often brownish streaks as well. Stem cankers can cause the death of a tomato plant before you can harvest the fruit.

"F" or "FF" indicates that the plants are resistant to the Fusarium oxysporum fungi which induce Fusarium wilt. This is a critical disease which causes the drooping and yellowing of the leaves beginning at the bottom of the tomato plant. Without treatment, Fusarium wilt can kill tomato plants well before the fruit can be picked. Some Fusarium fungi have become resistant themselves to the "F" resistance tomatoes, in which case, you need to choose plants with the "FF" coding.

"N" signifies that the plants are resistant to parasitic round worms, which often lie inactive in the earth. Effects of round worm infestation are root galls that are up to an inch in diameter. Afflicted plants are weak, do not react to fertilizer, and are inclined to droop when the weather is hot.

"St" specified tomatoes are not susceptible to grey leaf spot (Stemphylium). Affected tomatoes build up brown to black spots on older leaves. As the disease goes on, the spots become larger and the centres turn grey. The grey middles ultimately fall out, leaving behind small holes.

"T" indicates that the plants are resistant to the Tobacco Mosaic Virus. This results in a blotchy look to the leaves and smaller fruit and crop. Occasionally immature tomatoes will go brown.

"TSWV" points to resistance to the Tomato Spotted Wilt Virus. Signs of infection differ considerably dependent upon the variety of tomato, but consist of yellow and brown rings and brown streaks on tomato stems, leaves which have dead spots and tips, and seriously inferior growth. The tomatoes themselves may have red and orange discolorations when they are fully grown.

"V" means the tomato is not susceptible to the fungi which cause Verticillium wilt, Verticillium dahliae and V. albo-atrum. Signs of Verticillium wilt disease do not ordinarily become apparent until the plant is fruiting or it is not watered sufficiently. Signs include V-shaped gashes on the leaves.

Don't forget that disease resistant tomatoes are not necessarily immune to disease but if they do become infected, they are less likely to sustain as much damage as those varieties which are not disease resistant.

As well as choosing the right variety of disease resistant tomatoes, remember that changing where you plant your tomatoes can help prevent disease but be sure to rotate them with other plants which are not susceptible to the disease you are trying to eradicate.

Make sure that your tomato plants are well watered, are in well drained soil and are mulched to retain moisture. Spray with systemic insecticide or fungicide if you detect symptoms of disease (as long as you're not growing organic crops) and generally keep your tomato plants in as good a condition as possible.

Before planting your tomatoes, try to identify whether your garden already is home to any pests or diseases. Check the foliage and/or fruit of other plants in your garden and if you detect disease, take a sample to an expert to identify the cause. You will then be in a position to choose the right disease resistant tomatoes to plant.

By following sensible gardening practices, you will soon be able to eradicate the pests and diseases and end up with a bumper crop of tomatoes.

Growing Tomatoes - The Best Tips For Growing Tomato Plants For a Bumper Harvest

Now is a good time to start your tomato plants even though in the northern latitudes it is still to cold for them to grow naturally. I start to grow my seeds in a plug tray or cells. The reason for this is that the ones I use are fairly small so I can grow a lot of seeds in a small space and the other is that once the seedling starts to develop the root grows into the small amount of compost and binds this together. The seeds will need a temperature of 15C or more to get a good start and I just grow these in my kitchen on the windowsill. I do grow them in a propagator but they will grow in a normally heated house.

When the seedling is large enough I then pot this on into an individual plant pot. As I have grown these in a small cell then I just pop this out from the bottom of the tray and plant the whole seedling with the root ball intact. This does not disturb any roots and will not give your tomatoes a check to their growth. Handle the seedling by the leaves or root ball. Never touch the stem as in a developing seedling it is very easy to crush the stem and you end up killing the plant

Organic Bumper

When growing plants for use in my greenhouse, I always use a new clean plant pot. I do this because I do not want the possibility of introducing disease from an old plant pot into the compost surrounding the root. I will reuse the pots again, but only for plants I will be growing outside. As I only grow about 20 plants in my greenhouse, (tomatoes, chillies and cucumbers), it is not expensive to buy new pots for this small number of plants and it is worth it for the peace of mind in trying to keep my greenhouse disease free.

Growing Tomatoes - The Best Tips For Growing Tomato Plants For a Bumper Harvest

Once you have potted the seedling up you need to let it develop and grow on and during this period the temperature can be lower. My plants are currently in my greenhouse and the temperature in there is now 34F. I do have my plants in an electric propagator and the soil temperature in this is 46F, but I could just as easily grow them on, on a windowsill in my house. I just think the light is better in the greenhouse.

Before you put your plants in their final position it is better to let them get stressed in their pots and start to think they have problems. They will use up most of the food in the pots you are growing them in and this will trigger their survival instinct. This is to make seeds which will carry on in the future. In other words, it will start to develop tomatoes, well start to flower. This is the best time to plant your tomatoes. You should wait until the first truss, (a set of flowers), starts to set. This happens when you notice your first tiny tomatoes, even as small as a match head. Plant them earlier than this and the plants will just grow bulky at the expense of starting to fruit and fruit is what you grow tomato plants for.

I grow my plants on in large pots, (washed, cleaned and sterilized), which contain a multi purpose compost and I stand these on a bed of coir which I replace every year. Again, I am trying to minimize the possibility of disease in the greenhouse by using everything new every year. I do not do anything special to the plant pots and find the roots grow through the holes in the base and into the coir which acts like a sponge, retaining moisture and nutrients. When planting into pots, if your tomatoes are too long, just plant them deep. Snip off any excess leaves and the stem you bury will put out feeding roots and help develop a better and stronger plant.

I then grow the tomato plant up canes, tying the plants loosely to the cane. I use a natural string for this as if I drop any it will decompose naturally over time. A plastic string will not decompose and you may well be picking this out of your compost for years to come. Eventually your plants will reach the top of the canes and at this time I nip off the growing tip. This stops the plant growing any more and your tomato plant then puts all its energies into developing fruit. I also use special plastic covered metal canes. The reason, I can wash them and wipe them down with a disinfectant to help prevent disease.. I cannot easily do this with a traditional cane.

Watering needs to be carried out properly. Not so much water that the soil becomes waterlogged and not too little so that it dries out. There is no right and wrong answer as to how much water, but just aim for not too much and not too little. It usually depends on the sun.. Too much water and your growing tomatoes run the risk of getting something called blossom end rot. This is where the end of the tomato blackens and the flesh of the tomato rots and dies. The tomato usually continues to develop but there is a large blackish blemish on the end of it which is unsightly. You can cut this off when eating the tomato but it is better to avoid it in the first place. Not enough water should be obvious; your tomato plant will die without sufficient water. If you do find that you have let your tomato plants dry out too much do not soak the plants in loads of water. You need to rewet the soil gradually otherwise you will find that your tomatoes will gorge themselves, take up too much water and split. If a split happens, I harvest the tomatoes run a sharp knife on either side of the split in a v shape to remove the split and then either cook with them or chop and freeze. I will use the frozen tomato in some cooked meal later on such as a tomato soup. I will post a tomato soup recipe later.

One of the other things you need to do is feed your tomatoes. Feeding tomatoes is just as important as feeding yourself. You would not last very long with out food and your tomato plants will not last too long without food. There are loads of different foods you can buy and I have chosen to use a powdered specialist tomato food as this works well with my feeding system but you choose what suits you best. Just remember though to choose a food developed especially for tomato plants as these will contain magnesium which is essential to tomato plant development. They will also contain the other essential nutrients which your tomato plants need. Liquid feed or powdered feed is up to you but just remember to feed your tomato plants.

I am sure I do not need to go into detail about harvesting. Eat your tomatoes when they are ready. Many of my visitors to my house ask me why I grow my own tomatoes when they are readily available in the supermarkets and cheap as well. I just suggest they go into the greenhouse, pick one and eat it before they come back to the house. They never ask again because they know why I bother to grow them after that and I recommend you grow your own tomato plants to get your own harvest.

Read more below to find out.

1. Outline of Internet Marketing: For an education, Advertising Profits from Home does provide you with information about internet marketing and how to make money online. For those new to the concept this can be a good step in the right direction as learning to market online can be an incredibly confusing topic at first. The material in the book is well written and true to form, for those interested, there is an option to pay a monthly membership fee and join his program that offers more tools and information.

2. Discusses Paid Per Lead and Paid Per Sale Methods: The concept behind what Anthony Morrison teaches centers around companies paying you to advertise their product or website. The paid per lead method is when someone enters their name and e-mail, and the paid per sale method is when you earn a commission when a product is purchased through your link. One thing that Morrison emphasizes is that the less a person has to do the more likely it is that an action will be taken, meaning people are more likely to give a name and e-mail than they are to buy.

3. Further Investment Required to Succeed: Since the internet has changed so much, with Google and other search engines really cracking down on its content, cookie cutter websites simply don't do well anymore. Self-Publishing Tips For Formatting a Book

I've heard it said so many times, "I've always wanted to write a book, but I don t know where to start." Well, it's no more difficult than learning to play the piano, I tell you! Joking aside, here are some pointers that will help you get your rough draft book ready for the printer.

First of all, you have to actually get the book into an electronic format. I suggest you type up your text into a Microsoft Word document. The printer may prefer the document to be sent as a portable document file (PDF) by using Adobe Acrobat, Quark, InStyle or some other layout program. Using styles in Word can present an unstable document when opened in a different version of the program. But, for the typesetting, editing and formatting phase, I find Word does a great job.

Does Size Really Matter?

Self-Publishing Tips For Formatting a Book

Yes, when it comes to cost savings it does. The average paperback book size is five inches wide by eight inches tall which is one-half the size of a sheet of 8.5 by 11 inch paper. Finished size for hardcover books is 5.5 by 8.5 inches because the cover overhangs the paper's edge. However, the page size and setup is the same for paperback or hardcover. You'll need to select page setup from the file menu and open the tab called paper size, then type in the above mentioned page dimensions. In order to get the margins to print correctly and allow enough room for binding you need to set up your page with ½ (.50) inch margins on the top, bottom, and outside margins. Be sure to click on mirror margins and set the inside to ¾ (.75) inches. Most people my age wear readers or need bifocals, so a comfortable reading font (typeset) sizes for book print is between 11 and 12 points. Verdana is my favorite font because it is easier to read. I find that Arial font is hard to read because the i's and l's are too close together. Each line should have about 50-60 characters, including spaces. Each page should have approximately 40 lines. This should give you about 250 words per page.

Learning to use styles can drive you crazy, but if you are up for the challenge the feature can save you time. It allows you to create uniform text, paragraph settings, character spacing, and other qualities to selected portions of text. You can have the title in one font size and bold style, the chapter headings in a smaller font such as Times New Roman, and the body text in Verdana or whatever font you like best. Using styles will give the book a consistent look. Another advantage is when you change an attribute of the text in one paragraph, everything with that style will automatically update throughout the entire book. Pretty nifty!

You'll need to have headers and footers with chapter titles and page numbers. These are added by selecting "view" from the MS Word toolbar to open the header and footer. Then, type in your chapter title, author name or the book title, add the page number, etc. Section breaks will need to be created in order to define and customize the chapter headings. Use "insert" also on the MS Word toolbar to add a section break.

Self-publishing means you have to do everything yourself or else outsource various tasks. As writers we can get so close to our writing that we can't see our own typos. Even if you are an excellent writer, you will still need to have someone proofread your book because whatever you send to the printer is what is going to be printed.

If you are thinking of self-publishing your book, you should read Peter Bowerman's book "The Well-fed Self-Publisher" ISBN 0967059860. It could save you a lot of time and money!
